Half way through the installation, the installer can't seem to read the media anymore when trying to install vte. Looks much like a hardware level problem so I thought it was a bad media problem. Powered off and powered on again. Frugalware booted OK. Then I could pacman the vte packages and the rest. So the media was OK. It could be a doggy DVD drive though.
