Frugalware has pptp support for connecting to a VPN. However it can often be 
very difficult to configure, especially for linux new-comers. pptpconfig is a 
gui to help a user configure and start/stop a vpn connection using pptp. It 
unfortunately has some strange dependencies, being php-pcntl (simply add 
--enable-pcntl to the list of arguments when compiling php to get this) and 
php-gtk (this is a separate package which requires installation. All details of 
how to install it can be found here: 
http://quozl.netrek.org/pptp/pptpconfig/pptpconfig.phtml This would be 
extremely helpful for me as I need to connect to a VPN to use the internet at 
my university on my laptop. Currently I need to boot into my windows system if 
I need to net! :(

seems ok, i got the DNS address and so, but the group list is empty both in 
expert and base mode. I've tried to change mirror, but didn't help. I've also 
tried pre2 netinstaller, but the result was the same.

After installing it from the repos and having issues with it I went to the 
#winehq IRC channel and asked them for help and I was told winesetuptk was no 
longer used and was old and they now use winecfg. So for people like me to 
avoid similar problems maybe you could remove it from the repo. Although a 
better way would be if someone "pacman -Ss winesetuptk" you could somehow let 
them know wine no longer supports this so a noob like me doesnt bother trying 
to find and install winesetuptk from somewhere else. This could be helpful but 
either way it should be removed from the repos.

There is a problem with the nvidia package. X cant find the glx and nvidia 
modules to load with and crashes with errors. The problem is because the nvidia 
package installs the drivers in wrong locations (/usr/X11R6/...) which should 
be (/usr/lib/xorg/modules) A temporary workaround is to not use the nvidia 
package and use the install the nvidia driver manually by downloading the 
nvidia installer from nvidia.com and running the installer with 
"--x-module-path=/usr/lib/xorg/modules" option. However, this problem seems to 
be occuring only on some machines.

The fglrx dri was not working, however in the Xorg.0.log the DRI initialization 
was successful. (neither xorg6.8.2, xorg 7.0) The kernel driver was loaded 
successfully (AGP too), but glxinfo output was: NO DRI enabled. I was fighting 
with it till now. In the output of this command: "LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo" 
I have found this: libGL: OpenDriver: trying 
/lib/modules/fglrx//usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri//fglrx_dri.so I don't know where 
is this path set up, but when I have created a symlink to the fglrx_dri, DRI 
was enabled. I'm not sure if this path is incorrect only at me. Sorry for the 
long story. :)

The new nvidia pkg conflicts with libgl, but this causes dependency problems 
with games, such as ppracer. What I suggest you do is tell the nvidia pkg to 
provide libgl.

Distrowatch but maybe it was corrected by the DW editors. I would be more than 
happy to take a look at _any_ English text before implementation in either the 
base system or other areas like announcements etc. I have started working on 
the correction of the installer itself. Being a qualified translator, I have 
the necessary skills to do it right - better than you. ;-) If FBTS is not the 
appropriate place for such corrections, please advise another way. I recommend 
setting up a new category for such errors. I hope you agree with me that proper

Hi, Here's the output of lspci for my video card: 01:00.0 VGA compatible 
controller: nVidia Corporation NV15 (GeForce GTS/Pro) (rev a3) To use 
3D-acceleration on this card, I can only use drivers up to 7167, since Nvidia 
stopped supporting this older model according to their FAQ. (Side remark: the 
7167 driver works very well with X.org 6.8.2 on Slackware 10.2 with a 2.6.12 
kernel.) I wanted to install this driver on FW0.4rc1, but the nvidia-installer 
gave me the following error message: ERROR: The runtime configuration check 
failed for library 'libGL.so.1.0.7167' (expected: '/usr/lib/libGL.so.1', found: 
'/usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1'). The most likely reason for this is that 
conflicting OpenGL libraries are installed in a location not inspected by 
nvidia-installer. Please be sure you have uninstalled any third-party OpenGL 
and third-party graphics driver packages. I read in another bug-report that I 
could try and run the installer with the --x-module-path=/usr/lib/xorg/modules 
option, but I only got an error message about an invalid option... probably 
because this older version of the driver ignores that particular option. 
Suggestions warmly welcome. Cheers.

Hi, Here's an item for my list for Santa Claus. Though I don't mind if you 
deliver before X-Mas:oD GtkCDlabel is a nifty little app to generate CD-labels 
very easily. I used it almost daily on Slackware. Caution: it's a bit tricky to 
build. When built normally, it doesn't work well. Requires glade, liblade... 
and curiously, when Gnome libs are not installed, the Preview function doesn't 
work. But the app is great! And it would be nice to be able to install it with 
pacman.

This utility (awesfx) is used to load soundfonts into Soundblaster Live/Audigy 
etc. cards. Without this (or some other equivalent if there is one) you cannot 
use the MIDI synthesiser feature of these soundcards as the sound sample data 
is noit built into ROM on the cards but dynamically loaded into system ram.

Add an optional warning to pacman. This is to avoid errors caused by using an 
outdated local db for package installation (installation source, pkgver etc. 
were modified, thus pkgs will not be found etc.), especially for the case when 
one wants to add another pkg with -S. After each pacman command using the 
remote resources (-S), pacman should check when local db was last updated and 
display a warning: 'warning: local package database is old (last sync: ....)' 
or something similar. Maybe the warning period should be one week in stable 
releases but shorter in -current (3 days?) because of the frequent changes.

well no idea why but looks like the darcs setup for syncpkg doesn't work well 
sometimes. This is a snip from helicon: Darcs needs to know what name 
(conventionally an email address) to use as the patch author, e.g. 'Fred Bloggs 
'. If you provide one now it will be stored in the file '_darcs/prefs/author' 
and used as a default in the future. To change your preferred author address, 
simply delete or edit this file. What is your email address? darcs: : hGetLine:

I just installed acidrip (pacman -S acidrip). Install went OK. Manually 
double-checked the dependencies, they are all there too. My DVD drive is 
/dev/hdc, with a symlink /dev/dvd pointing to it. Ah yes, and I use FW 0.4rc1, 
which I just updated yesterday evening. When I launch Acidrip, I click on the 
"Load" button... I hear my DVD player wheeze into action... but no single title 
appears in the main window. Though the little status bar says "DVD read OK", 
and the "Debug" window is happy equally. Which leaves me clueless.

Currently there are tools in frugalware to build dvi files (from .tex files 
with the tetex package). But there are no generic tools to view the .dvi files! 
gpdf/evince can i think and so can kpdf i think (not sure)... but thats not 
that great if you dont use gnome or kde (still usable... but not great). There 
is a program called xdvi: http://math.berkeley.edu/~vojta/xdvi.html

I've not been able to do a net install with rc2 because the installer does not 
continue after the packages have been selected (I selected the default, i.e. 
all); it then jumps back to where you choose your language (start dialogue). 
It's neither possible to continue when you select that you want to view every 
individual package or not. rc1 worked ok on the same machine. Sorry that I 
can't be more specific but I just wanted to let you know.

openal should be moved from makedepends to depends line of torcs, as if openal 
is not installed, then torcs can't be started with default options, since it's 
trying to use openal's libfoobar.so (can't remember exactly the name). Later on 
openal can be turned off in torcs itself, but I dunno how to do that without 
ever running torcs.

Well, i just installed pacman-tools as i wanted to use repoman to merge some 
packages. but when i run repoman, i get this error : (~) prix # repoman upd 
warning: this operation can take minutes, please be patient :: Synchronizing 
the Frugalware Source Tree... /usr/bin/repoman: line 159: rsync: command not 
found done. -- This means that repoman requires rsync, and pacman-tools doesnt 
have repoman as dependency. I had to manually install rsync to make it work.

I just did a fresh install of Wanda 0.4 rc2. I have four primary partitions as 
follows: /dev/hda1 WIndows /dev/hda2 Swap /dev/hda3 / /dev/hda4 /home I 
installed GRUB on the MBR using the installer. But GRUB created 4 entries. One 
for Windows, one for memtest and two for Frugalware! One is completely wrong. 
It created an entry for my HOME partition. I do not have a kernel on my /home

I am trying to get my Atheros wireless to work on Wanda 0.4rc2. I installed the 
madwifi package and configured the card using iwconfig. But now when I do a 
"iwconfig", the following warning message appears: Warning: Driver for Device 
ath0 has been compiled with version 19 of wireless extensions while this 
program supports up to version 17. Somethings may be broken. Perhaps this 
explains why I can't get wireless up and running. It shows connected but an IP 
address is not being assigned to ath0 using dhcpcd or dhclient. Is wireless 
broken in Wanda rc2? Harry

I just installed Frugalware 0.4rc2. KDE control centre was working. Then I 
configured wireless networking and did a pacman -Syu. After the upgrade to 
current, the KDE control centre or menu editor no longer works. Nothing happens 
when you click on the Control Centre or Menu editor. It should prompt you for 
the root password and then open the application. It doesn't. Harry

I just installed Wanda 0.4 rc2. During installation, it properly detected my 
sound card and installed the following required modules: snd_intel8x0 
snd_intel8x0m snd_ac97_codec snd_ac97_bus However, Sound will not work unless I 
open up a terminal as root and run alsaconf after EACH reboot. I checked to see 
whether any additional modules were being loaded after I ran alsaconf. No 
additional modules were loaded. So the issue is NOT whether the proper modules 
are being loaded at bootup. I think alsaconf runs some sort of sound card 
initialization script. Perhaps the needed sound card initialization script is 
missing in the Frugalware boot up scripts. I upgraded Wanda rc2 to cuurent. 
That made no difference. I still must run alsaconf in a root terminal window 
after EACH reboot. Harry

I just installed Wanda 0.4 rc2 and updated to current. I tried to watch QT 
videos at www.apple.com/quicktime. I also tried to watch streaming QT and WM9 
videos at http://www.mc-internet.com/wedding/samples.html In each case, nothing 
happened when I clicked the link for the streaming QT or WM9 video in firefox. 
I checked and I do have codecs, mplayer, mplayerplug-in and totem installed. 
Firefox shows the totem plugin and mplayerplug-in installed. The totem plugin 
is handling the QT and WM video. I am sure the totem plugin is to blame. The 
totem plugin has always been VERY unreliable for streaming video. Many distros 
have disabled the totem plugin and let the mplayer plugin takeover (or the vlc 
plugin). I tried to get streaming video to work in firefox by disabling the 
totem plugin by doing the following: mv 
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libtotem_mozilla.a 
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libtotem_mozilla.a_backup mv 
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libtotem_mozilla.la

~/.mozilla/firefox/pluginreg.dat and restarted firefox. The totem plugin 
disappeared and the mplayerplug-in is still there (when you do about:plugins in 
firefox). But the mplayer plugin does not show any support for QT and WM9 even 
though the mplayerplug-in has support for QT and WM9 enabled. Now I am baffled. 
The mplayer plug-in should be taking over the streaming of QT and WM9. I cheked 
the FrugalBuilds for mplayer, mplayerplug-in and codecs. They all look good. 
Any ideas on how to get streaming video to work in Frugalware. I could live 
with the totem plugin (if you can get it to work) but I prefer the mplayer 
plugin (like most other Linux distros). Harry

Current installation of freenx uses a secure key which complicates post 
installation a lot. I am suggesting to install freenx which default key comes 
with NoMachine. This will take away all post installation work and client 
machine can connect to server without a need to copy anything from server.

Configuration with the NoMachine Key Configuring the freenx server via the 
nomachine key is somewhat less secure than generating your own keys, but far 
easier to set up. It might be a good way to get freenx up and running quickly 
(then secure it later) or to aid in troubleshooting your setup. First, make 
sure you install the 0.4.0 version or later of net-misc/nxserver-freenx. 
Previous versions do not appear to have the nxsetup utility that makes this 
method extremely easy. (At the time of this writing, you have to use the ~x86 
or ~ppc to /etc/portage/package.keywords in order to merge this version.) Once 
that and its dependencies are built, run: nxsetup --install 
--setup-nomachine-key --clean --purge And that's it. Provided ssh is configured 
properly, you should now be able to connect to the machine with nxclient on a 
remote machine.

j2re installs a link at /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so to 
/usr/lib/java/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so. But firefox does not 
seem to pick up this plugin. Instead, if you manually add a links at 
/usr/lib/firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so to 
/usr/lib/java/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so it works.

OpenOffice 2.0.2 (as of openoffice.org-2.0.2-1-i686.fpm, 
openoffice.org-i18n-hu-2.0.2-1-i686.fpm and 
openoffice.org-dict-hu-20031107-2-i686.fpm) can not save any kind of documents 
in it's own format (odt, odp, ods, etc...). The only way to save a document is 
save it in M$ format (doc, ppt, xls, etc...). I can export them to PDF without 
glitches. One addition: in the "Save as..." dialog there are no descriptions 
for OOo's filetypes, only the extensions (eg. .odt). I don't know this is the 
same bug, but should be solved promptly - if I can help anything, mail me.

Wanda rc2 failed to properly recognize my USB Microsoft Optical Intellimouse on 
/dev/psaux. For some reason, it thought I had a PS/2 mouse not a USB mouse. The 
quick fix is to modify the xorg.conf file and replace PS/2 with ImPS/2 fro the 
protocol. Harry

support via mplayer is broken in Frugalware-current due to the way the mplayer 
package was compiled. SOLUTION - If you want mplayer / mplayerplug-in to handle 
RealVideo streaming, you will need to recompile mplayer with live555.com 
support. See the following from the mplayerplug-in mailing list: "You have to 
get the files from live555.com and then compile them into mplayer... I 
comfigure mplayer like this ./configure --enable-freetype - 
--with-reallibdir=/home/kdekorte/cvs/mplayer/rp9codecs --enable-live - 
--with-livelibdir=/home/kdekorte/cvs/mplayer/live --prefix=/usr - 
--enable-win32 --enable-xvmc --enable-xmms I have the live555.com files 
expanded into /home/kdekorte/cvs/mplayer/live" RECOMMENDATIONS: Modily the 
FrugalBuild for mplayer to include live555.com support (for streaming RealVideo 
support). (I have not had time to do 4 but it would be a big help for those for 
want to watch streaming RealVideo from sites like www.cbc.ca etc).

which lighttpd doesnt work. please compile the php package with

repoman merge to get the SBU. I just found out bison is missing from 
makedepends().It can be easy reproduced just -Rd bison && repoman merge

I've tried changing /etc/sysconfig/desktop, to make gdm the default login

screen. Is there some other config file I need to change?

1. /dev/vbi* should be owned by the video group 2. When I plug my digital 
camera to usb it does not mount, so the only way to use it is via gphoto2, 
which would like to use /proc/bus/usb/001/(...) which has -rw-r--r-- 1 root 
root it should be like -rw-rw-r-- 1 root camera or something like this thx

I am running Frgalware-current. When you add the Xfce4 Weather Plugin to the 
xfce4 panel, the weather plugin will initially work. But when you close xfce4 
and restart xfce4, the panel crashes and disappears when xfce4 loads.

The volume plugin for the xfce4 panel does not work. You can see the volume 
controls when clicked but you are unable to change the volume. When you try to 
change the volume, the volume always goes back to zero. When you exit xfce4, 
you see the following error: ** (xfcd4-panel:2685): CRITICAL **: vc_get_volume: 
assertion 'mixer_handle! = -1' failed Sound does work. Alsamixer works. It is 
the xfce4 volume plugin that does not work.

drivers of gimp-print named guten-print. This version is release candidate 2, 
bur works fine. So, we can have both version, gimp-print and guten-print. I 
think is so easy to do because the process to install is the same that

Installed frugalware with 2 cd's - tried all 3 metods of boot setup. grub mbr 
no good, grub root sector no good, doesn't write to floppy. I use grub on my 
other os's with no problem.

After a fresh install of Frugalware 0.4 (Wanda) on an AMD64 3400+ ASUS 
Motherboard K8VSE nVidia FX5500 with 1.5 gigs ram on a WD1200. Did a fresh 
install of Wanda via the DVD iso image available, installed everything for 
evaluation, On first boot it hangs at initializing CUPS. Otherinformation on 
requesh, please specify what is needed.

bash-completion fails with this error.. [rohan@darkstar ~]$ sudo pacman -S 
kdebash: /usr/bin/find: Argument list too long Also, pacman -Si wont work .. we 
need to type -S -i. This was recently fixed in arch linux, please, if possible, 
fix it in fw also. Thanks. Rohan.
