i would separate two problems: the problem of desktop managers and other
config files. handling the configuration of desktop files might be
confusing for people, and there are problems with it
secondly, handling other config files (like iptables) have already been
fixed since if the md5 of the old, the current and the new config file
are dirrent, then pacman will _not_ overwrite that file.

imho a config utility (xdmconfig, or so) should be created to detect the
currently installed dm-s and to activate one of them (it would use
chkconfig, and would disable all dm-s except the selected)
if a desktop manager installed, the post_install would run the utility
to select the just installed dm.
