Yep quite right HTML4 can easily be made with a transfer to XHTML in
the future in mind - and even most sloppy HTML4 can quickly be
converted using tidy.
Although I agree with VMiklos that server side logic to serve XHTML as
text/html to IE and as application/xhtml+xml to all other browsers is
a valid solution.

In my mind anything backend dependant can be designed for the backend,
rather than having to have the backend modified in any way - although
I may offer up some suggestions / additions along the way mostly I'm
happy just to make a high quality implementation of the design/spec
you are already working with.
I don't usually develop in python but I'm sure I won't have any
trouble writing/modifying basic template logic if need be.
