The Frugalware Developer Team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Frugalware 1.6rc2, the second technical preview of the upcoming 1.6 stable release. Here are some of the major improvements, fixes and updates since 1.6rc1:

Before too much of the new year goes past we wanted to take the opportunity to review the achievements of 2011 and look ahead to what’s planned for 2012. It’s an exciting period in Frugalware’s development with the development team making progress in many areas. This article highlights some of the major achievements and planned projects but not all of them. If you are upgrading current or to current any time soon, you will need to take special measures. We have switched our stock kernel to using an initrd by default now, but this only effects i686 and x86_64 for now. All other archs are unchanged. If you are running a fairly simple grub setup, you only need to run grubconfig after the complete upgrade. If not, then you need to add this line to your Frugalware menu entry in menu.

I’m sorry to report that one of the important servers of the Frugalware infrastructure was compromised on August 25. It took a while to find out the details of how that was possible, read here if you’re interested.
In short: we found that the attacker installed a backdoor similar to the one installed on kernel.org recently. We have already reinstalled the operating system, plus taken steps to prevent a similar attack in the future.
